The Shadow of the Trinity

June 15th, 2009 Posted in writing

The church recently celebrated Trinity Sunday, when we recall that God is a community of three Persons. And though it may appear that the feast is solely a reminder of the nature of the Christian God, it is about us, too.

For in the Trinity there exist both distinct persons and a shared nature, and in genuine human communities the same ingredients exist.  The difference is that in our case, the desire for unity and the fact of diversity can give rise to difficult tensions, while in the Trinity, they are a source of creativity and mutual affection.

Just as Adam and Eve bore God’s image, so, too, does the human race. The mystery of the Trinity has indeed left its mark in us, and our urge to live together in unity while repsecting and loving our individual differences is a shadow of Trinity’s life in us.
